KU has 15 research institutes on and off campus whose mission is to facilitate individual research as well as cooperative research activities in academia, industries, and government organizations. The institutes have thus far demonstrated outstanding research results, which proved conducive to the development of the nation and the community through the applications of the respective theories in the arenas of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering.
 
¤ŭInstitute for Far Eastern Studies (IFES)
IFES is dedicated to scholarly research into the unification of Korea and world politics. As a result of its extensive research activities, IFES publishes Asian Perspective(in English), a journal of regional and international affairs, Korea and World Politics(in Korean), and The Journal of Northeast Asia Studies(in Korean), along with intermittent research reports, collections, and publications of scholarship on related topics.
 
¤ŭInstitute for Kyungnam Regional Studies
The Institute for Kyungnam Regional Studies conducts research on politics,public administration, economy, society, culture, and information of Kyungnam Province , and is dedicated to the development of Kyungnam Province . The Institute has functioned as a think tank in forging the future direction of the community as a consequence of diagnosing local issues and providing feedback.
 
¤ŭEnvironmental Research Institute
The Environmental Research Institute was established in 1978 to help solve environmental and pollution problems. The Institute aims to provide expertise and leadership in researching and solving environmental problems at local, national, regional and global levels, and contributing to the solution of environmental problems using the advances in environmentally friendly technologies.
 
¤ŭHumanities Research Institute
The Humanities Research Institute aims to foster research into humanities, to promote academic exchange, and to collaborate with research institutes abroad. The Institute supports the individual and collaborative research needs of faculty. In addition, the Institute initiates lectures, conferences, and other public events.
 
¤ŭBasic Sciences Research Institute
The Basic Sciences Research Institute was established in March, 1988 to advance knowledge in basic sciences. The Institute promotes basic research in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and the respective applied fields.
 
¤ŭEducational Research Institute
The Educational Research Institute aims to improve the quality of education and the educational environment through collaborative research by educational theorists and teachers. The Institute promotes research on educational theory and the practice of education to meet the challenges facing educators.
 
¤ŭInstitute of Industrial and Business Management
The Institute of Industrial and Business Management conducts research and provides community service programs on all aspects of the national economy, the regional economy, and industrial and business management. It helps solve problems in industrial and business management as well. Specifically, the institute aims to contribute to the development of regional economy by providing the following services: a variety of training programs for local employers and employees; research on prices and market; management consulting; cost accounting followed by analyses and investigations; conferences and educational programs, and etc.
 
¤ŭLaw Research Institute
The Law Research Institute conducts research on the theory and practice of law, disseminates research results, and contributes to legal development and law enforcement. The Institute supports law education, produces publications, and sponsors numerous conferences, workshops and seminars on legal topics. It also provides legal consultations.
 
¤ŭInstitute of Advanced Materials
The Institute of Advanced Materials was established in September, 1990 to foster research on advanced materials and advance science and industry within the nation. The Institute provides industrial companies with necessary information and technology consultation, develops training programs, and conduct research. It also promotes academic exchange and collaborates with universities and research institutes in other nations.
 
¤ŭInstitute of Food and Biotechnology
The Institute of Food and Biotechnology was established to utilize the knowledge and experience of researchers and facilities, and to promote the food and biotechnology industries around the region. This in turn will increase the problem-solving ability of researchers and will benefit faculty teaching in related courses.
 
¤ŭInstitute of Information and Communication
The Institute of Information and Communication was established to lead the knowledge-based society of the 21st century. The Institute develops, organizes, utilizes and make available applications of information and communication technology in support of broad-based participation. In addition, it supports collaborative projects by Industry-Institute-University for effective and affordable access to information and communication technology.
 
¤ŭInstitute of Intelligent Mechanical System
The Institute of Intelligent Mechanical System aims to conduct research on, and develop the new technology of mechatronics in the 21st century. The Institute is devoted to the development of science and technology within the nation and in fostering innovation to activate regional industry.
 
¤ŭInstitute for Military Affairs
The Institute for Military Affairs was established to further collaboration between the university and the ROK Army and contribute to the development of the Army through research on military studies and military affairs. In addition to research on military affairs as a whole, the institute offers a variety of training programs for commissioned students and is involved in academic exchanges with foreign agencies as part of achieving the goals of its own.
 
¤ŭInstitute of Intelligent-Type Home
The Institute of Intelligent-Type Homes seeks the development of human-friendly and intelligent systems in the home environment. It unites the areas of Information & Technology, and develops future-oriented advanced technologies related to intelligent-type (smart) homes. In addition it seeks to transfer the developed technologies to the industrial arena. In particular, the institute has been undertaking research and development in the exchange of intelligent home technologies and local strategic project information, by building up networks for industry, education and research, centered around the Kyungnam province.
